A wildlife pond is the single most useful thing most gardens can add. It does not need to be large. It needs to be considered.

Start with the site

Sun, shelter and gentle access for amphibians matter more than size. Aim for at least one shallow shelf at no more than 100mm depth.

Shallow shelves are where life happens.

"If you only do one thing well, get the shape right before you reach for the liner."

Plants do the heavy lifting

Native marginals, a couple of oxygenators and patience. That is most of the recipe. Skip ornamental fish for the first season and let the pond settle.
